Trends in Modern Piracy : Geographical Shifts, and Predicting the Next "Hot Spots"

The period of modern maritime piracy has now been with us long enough to show certain trends and patterns. Piracy's success contains within itself the seeds of its own demise: as it becomes too successful, it provokes a reaction from the international community, which causes a decline in the profitability of piracy. Piracy has also demonstrated a remarkable tendency towards clear geographical shifts from one "hot spot" to the next. Our increased understanding of piracy cycles and geographical trends has provided us some level of predictive ability, allowing us to suggest some of the next "hot spots" for maritime piracy.
